I finally have a little free time, so let me present 2 movies to check out.

First recommendation is Ghost Writer, although in limited release, it received a really good rating and is well cast.

Consensus: While it may lack the revelatory punch of Polanski's finest films, Ghost Writer benefits from stylish direction, a tense screenplay, and a strong central performance from Ewan McGregor.

Synopsis: When a successful British ghostwriter, THE GHOST, agrees to complete the memoirs of former British Prime Minister ADAM LANG, his agent assures him it’s the opportunity of a lifetime. But the project seems doomed from the start—not least because his predecessor on the project, Lang’s long-term aide, died in an unfortunate accident.

The Ghost flies out to work on the project, in the middle of winter, to an oceanfront house on an island off the U.S. Eastern seaboard. Film Synopsis thanks to Film Forum:

The film is the debut from Israeli and Palestinian co-directors Yaron Shani and Scandar Copti, whose location filming, use of nonprofessional actors and balanced perspective lend a palpable authenticity to a complex, cross-cultural drama -- set in Jaffa’s multi-ethnic Ajami neighborhood, home to Jews, Muslims and Christians. The repercussions of a revenge killing reveal the cultural and religious tensions simmering beneath the surface: two young brothers fear assassination after their uncle wounds a local criminal; a young Palestinian refugee works illegally in Israel to finance his mother’s surgery; an Israeli woman and her affluent Palestinian boyfriend dream of building a life together; and a Jewish cop is obsessed with finding his missing brother.

Go See...A Room and A Half (Foreign Film by a Russian Director).

Here is a Synopsis from Film Forum:

Joseph Brodsky, the Russian-Jewish-American poet, won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1987 and was made poet laureate of the U.S. in 1991. Given that he was expelled from the USSR in 1972, it’s not surprising that much of his writing deals with themes of exile, loss and memory. An imagined return to the parents he never saw again and his childhood home of St. Petersburg (“a city whose color was fossilized vodka”) is the essence of this wonderfully nostalgic, whimsical movie. Made by famed Russian animator Andrey Khrzhanovsky, A ROOM AND A HALF recalls the glory years of a much-loved child and the particular absurdities and indignities suffered by Jews under the Soviet regime in the ‘50s and ‘60s. The filmmaker’s light touch – his use of animation, stills, archival footage, and scripted, dramatic material – melds the sophisticated surrealism of Magritte with the folk mysticism of Chagall.

Book Recommendation- Daemon by Daniel Suarez

Here is a review of the book by Robin Cook (who is a doctor and author of such titles as Coma)

Daemon is an ambitious novel, which sets out not only to entertain, which it surely does, but also to challenge the reader to consider social issues as broad as the implications of living in a technologically advanced world and whether democracy can survive in such a world.

The storyline portrays one possible world consequent to the development of the technological innovations that we currently live with and the reality that the author, Suarez, imagines will evolve, and it is chilling and tense (on www.thedaemon.com the reader can find evidence that the seemingly incredible advances Suarez proposes could in fact become real). Daemon is filled with multiple scenes involving power displays by the Daemon's allies resulting in complete loss of control by its enemies, violence with new and innovative weaponry, explosions, car crashes, blood, guts, and limbs-cut-off galore.

As far as computer complexity, Daemon will satisfy any computer geek's thirst. I was thankful for Pete Sebeck, the detective in the book whose average-person understanding of computers necessitates an occasional explanation about what is going on. I came away from the novel with a new understanding, respect, and fear of computer capability.

In the end, Suarez invites the reader to enter the "second age of reason," to think about where recent and imminent advances in computer technology are taking us and whether we want to go there. For me, it is this "thinking" aspect of the novel which makes it a particularly fun, satisfying, and significant read.

The movie stars Ethan Hawke from Gattica and Training Day. It's 2017 and the undead (vampires) outnumber humans. The humans have been supplying the undead with blood but this supply is decreasing and therefore, the undead must do something to make up for this dwindling blood supply.

So far, it has a 69% rating on RottenTomatoes. It has gotten good reviews and any movie with Robert Downey Jr is worth watching. The movie is a mix of action and comedy. It portrays Sherlock Holmes in a different light by demonstrating his toughness as well as intelligence.

This movie is supposed to be AWESOME. The reviews for it are very good.

Everyone needs to check out...

Lovely Bones!!!!

This movie has an interesting concept. The main character is killed and she observes her murderer and her family from Heaven. She helps her family solve the mystery of her murder. It sort of reminds me of that Robin Williams movie when he dies and tries to find his wife who committed suicide and wants to bring her back to Heaven. This movie is based on a book by Alice Sebold.

It has a middle of the road rating of 52% on Rotten Tomatoes. But, I think its worth a look.

Ok. The movie to see this upcoming Friday is....

Brothers.

This might just be me but I think Toby Maguire trying to be serious is kinda funny. The fact that his real life friend, Jake Gyllenhaal, is playing the role of the friend who sleeps with his wife is funny.

The premise of the story is based off a foreign made film. Toby Maguire goes off to fight and is presumed dead. Jake swoops in and sleeps with his wife. Unfortunately, Toby shows up and starts to rage once he finds out Jake has been sleeping with his wife.

There is no consensus on the film yet, but so far it has a 60% rating on RottenTomatoes. This could change in either direction before Friday. So in the meantime, you can monitor this on the site.

This movie could be runner up for 2nd biggest comedy of the year, next to 2012.

Ok. There is not much out there to speak of. I know this is offensive to fans of the Twilight Series and the new movie: New Moon.

But, the movie did not get a good review which I am sure will be disregarded heavily by fans.

So, I will recommend three movies and you can choose between them.

1. Blind Side- 68%
2. The Sun- 90%
3. Defamation- 90%

The percentages are the feedback that came from RottenTomatoes.

Also, check out the movie 2012. It may go down as the Biggest Comedy of the Year. (Irony)

I know this is not something I would usually blog about or even think of posting but I will make a post if I think its worth mentioning. If you watch anime or at least know what it is. You need to check out the revamped Full Metal Alchemist series called Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood which supposedly follows the Manga more closely. It is extremely good and just gets better every episode. It will not disappoint.

There has been some confusion about what to write about for our $250 scholarship. The topic is 'How would you use Skoolboy?' Even though our slogan is books and stuff, if you think the site would be better suited for ipods, blackberries, laptops, or skateboards, write about those things. You do not have to write about how you would use the site based on how we have described it on the page.

If you are still confused, here are some topic suggestions:

1. I would use Skoolboy to perform real time searches for things being sold online right now....

2. I would use Skoolboy to do my homework.....(Not realistic but if you can describe it in such a way that sounds feasible, these are the things we like to read)

3. I would use Skoolboy to sell all my stuff and have them ship it for me....(Ok, thats asking for a lot but again if you can describe how it would work and make it feasible, we'd love to hear it)

These are just some ideas off the top of my head and if you would like to use them, we would not view your essay any different from another person. We care about content and quality.

Be creative and have fun with it!

This is the time when most students panic and realize they need to buy books and sell other books from last semester if they have not done so already. Some of the common places students start to search include but not limited to are: Facebook Marketplace, Half.com, Amazon, and a myriad of other sites. These sites are all frequented by college students and other independent book sellers. Two great resources for researching the best prices all over the web instantaneously include gettextbooks.com and studentlistings.com. Still, these sites provide the lowest prices and not necessarily the best products. For example, you may find a book that is the best deal but the description of the book is as follows: "Cover is mangled, pages are frayed, coffee stains,etc." Therefore, it is important to visit these sites and read the description before purchasing the book. These sites are great because it alleviates the hours that would have been spent scouring the internet and the vast number of sites that sell textbooks.

Check out Idea Blob, which is a site that allows budding entrepreneurs to voice their ideas on this site and others can give you advice and comment on your idea(s). Are the Rumors about Facebook Marketplace True?

I've been doing some research and it appears that Facebook Marketplace is not to be trusted. According to several users on Twitter, it seems that people are encountering scammers and fake listings. I personally have not used the service so I cannot completely make a judgment on it. Facebook Marketplace was put into place to directly compete with Craigslist.

There are three essential qualities students want when it comes to textbooks:

1. Cheap Textbooks (Not breaking your bank account)

2. Reliable Service (Being able to get back money from bad sellers or security from bad buyers)

3. Selling Textbooks Back w/ Ease (Getting a decent price for books and selling it in a reasonable amount of time)

These three areas are essential for any successful business that wants to capture the college market. There are businesses that do this right to some degree. Still, some students continue to take the easy way out and sell back to the bookstore or not sell their books at all. This is somewhat puzzling considering the vast audience that will be available when books are placed online. There must some other attribute or quality that is missing. I wonder what it is?

Is there really a true college marketplace out there? There are a plethora of websites to choose from that sell textbooks and have a huge inventory of books. Still, students can still end up spending over $300 or more on books for one semester and close to $600 for the entire year. This amount of money is still a little high for most students. Would a college marketplace of just students selling to each other solve this problem? I think so because students understand that other students are not loaded with cash so they would price their textbooks reasonably. Instead of looking for new or old textbooks sold by large companies who are only concerned about their bottom line, it would be better to buy from another student who wouldn't mind some extra cash for their book. A student would be less concerned about making a profit then getting rid of their book and making some money on it.
