October Newsletter- 10-25-08

Yo, sorry for the late newsletter but this has been a very busy month for me personally and others on the sKoolBoY staFF. By the way, my name is Leonard, I am the founder of sKoolBoY. I'm sure some of you thought this site was run by robots or by ghosts??? Halloween just around the corner. Anyway, for this newsletter, there is not much to say since I have not had much time to add more International textbooks to the site or posts on the blog. I will be adding items as soon as I can, possible in the coming days. Right now, we are assessing the website and thinking about making changes which we have been making announcements about in the past. We are not going to make any concrete changes yet but we are hashing out ideas and trying to make the site better and expand our base. That's all for now, if you want to contact me or send an email to us. Send an email to l.desir@skoolboy.com or contact@skoolboy.com.

Have you heard of CampusFood.Com?

We at sKoolBoY would like to recommend this very interesting and frankly very essential website for college students. Everyone needs to eat and this is a great way for you to buy food from restaurants near your college campus. Think about it, you are sitting in your class and your stomach is grumbling, just go to campusfood.com and search for your school and see if any restaurants are listed. Choose a restaurant, pick what you want, pay for your order, and you can be eating your food right after you leave the class. Don't stay hungry! Itadikimasu(Japanese)! Eat Up!

In Memory of 9/11

We at sKoolBoY would like to take the time to pay tribute to all the people who lost their lives or sacrificed their lives to save others during 9/11. Our hearts go out to the families who were impacted by this terrible and tragic event. We hope that everyone takes this time to remember that we are all the same and have to work together to unite others. That is one of the lessons that 9/11 taught everyone and we hope that everyone remembers that.

Reserve Price-Now You Know

We just want to clear up some confusion about some auctions on the site. Certain items have a reserve price which means that the item will only sell after it is bid to a certain price. For example, if you see a bid for $5, it may have a reserve price of $10. That means once you have bid the item to $10, that is the lowest price the seller is willing to accept. You can always "Buy It Now" which is a price that the seller is willing to sell an item right away. This price is always higher than the reserve price. If you are still unsure about anything on the site, we explain this further on the site. Click on the link at the bottom of the page that says "How To Use Site." Or post comments on here or send us an email at help@skoolboy.com.

Students are Lazy, We know that!

It is common knowledge that college students are inherently lazy. It seems that they have the ability to buy or sell their textbooks online but continue to act against their best interests. If they buy books online, they save tons of money. Now, several students buy their books online but compared to the total amount of college students out there, this is surprisingly a small percentage of students. The percentage of students who end up selling their books back online is an even lesser percentage. You might say, wait, how come I find people selling books on other sites? Well, that's true, but you might find that a handful of people are selling the book you need at decent prices. What if everyone who used that textbook you need decided to sell it online? That would create a flood of books and you would most likely find the book you need. Unfortunately, schools nowadays are requiring that students purchase the most current edition of the book which might not be offered by other students who had the previous condition. This forces the student to buy from the school bookstore. In other cases, a particular class may have a special textbook created for that class which is another way of forcing a student to buy from the bookstore. We at sKoolBoY understand that this is wrong and students end up spending $100-$200 more on books because of this type of sneaky way of selling books. But, imagine that amount of money you could recoup for selling your book back online at sKoolBoY and telling your friends that you are selling your book on here as well. Of course, we are not the only site that offers this, BUT, we do offer students the opportunity to sell their books on the site and get a better Return. How? You can sell your book on sKoolBoY for FREE. That means you post the item on the site without paying insertion fees. Then, when the item is sold, you only pay 4% of the selling price. Now, imagine that you bought your book for $200. Ridiculous Price! But, you were forced to buy it at the bookstore or could not find a good price online. Now, you want to sell it online because the bookstore will only give you $50 back or less depending on the condition, which is HORRIBLE! So, you decide to sell it online at sKoolBoY, let's say you sell it for $120 considering that is used but in good condition. That means you make $115.20 if you subtract 4% from $120 which is $4.80. Now, that is way BETTER than selling it back to the bookstore. You just made an extra $65 from selling it online. That is just an example of what you could make from selling it online. Most students are interested in buying their books first. So, lets say someone is selling the same book, they make be satisfied with selling it for $75 or even less than that. The more people that participate, the better your chances of making some nice pocket money to spend on Campus and the more likely you will find someone selling your book at a better price than what the bookstore is offering. Prove us wrong and be proactive in buying/selling your textbooks and other stuff online because soon most things will be handled online anyway so it always better to be ahead of the curve.

Get Prepped is not good: Here's Why...

Recently, one of our staff members used a website called Getprepped.com and received tutoring from a tutor named Jeanette. He took the test and received a decent score and was curious about whether he should retake it again or apply to Law school anyway. He tried to contact his tutor and she would not even reply to his emails or the few messages that were left on her phone. He then proceeded to contact GetPrepped.com who were not very helpful in reprimanding this tutor. The tutor said she was working 50+ hour weeks and could not talk on the phone. That seemed ok but several times when she tutored the skoolboy staff member, she was on the phone during his tutoring time. Therefore, she was being dishonest and disingenuous. We here at sKoolBoY.com give GetPrepped.com a D for service and Jeanette Smith an F for her lack of maturity and professionalism. Tell us your experiences with bad tutors or other tutoring companies like Kaplan and Princeton Review, etc.

Future of E-Commerce

Target was recently sued by an organization that advocates for blind people. According to the lawsuit, Target's website was not properly equipped for blind people. Therefore, they had to settle with the group for 6 million dollars. We realize here at sKoolBoY that we may come under scrutiny as well for this type of lawsuit and will try to be more accessible to our blind users.

Rate Your Professor- Very Important

We here at sKoolBoY recommend that you check all of your teachers out on ratemyprofessor.com. It is a great website for checking out your teachers before choosing your class schedule. It can mean the difference between straight A's or grades that are all over the place. Don't gamble with your GPA. You don't want to look back and say "Man!, I should have switched out of that class earlier." Some of the staff members feel your pain, especially Progressive Florida. We had a class together at ??? and that teacher was horrible, if we had just switched we would have ended up with at least a B and not a C which was the grade for over 60% of that class. Be smart and check out ratemyprofessor.com today before the deadline to add/drop a course passes.

Internation Edition Textbooks- Cheaper and Softer

We are always trying to improve the price of the books sold on our website and we are investigating international edition textbooks which are essentially the same as the U.S version except that it is mostly printed in black and white and may lack some supplemental information. Still, if students can save 50% or more on their books, we will try our best to offer books at these low prices. In addition, the international edition is usually a soft cover which makes it lighter to carry around as well. We must note that shipping will cost more to obtain an international edition, but the total price will still be less than what you would normally pay full price for a new U.S edition. In the end, it is worth your time to check and see if the international edition is available for a particular book you are looking to purchase.

Digital Textbooks: New Frontier?

Are digital textbooks going to replace traditional textbooks? So far, it seems that paper is here to stay but maybe there will be a transition in the long term. At Skoolboy, we were thinking about including a category just for electronic textbooks. Electronic textbooks are good but they require having a computer or some sort of device to open the file and read it. It is more convenient to use electronic text since you do not have to carry it around. The reason why Electronic textbooks have not become mainstream has to do with file sharing and the textbook or book industry would suffer if all books went digital because that would lead to piracy and people would get their textbooks for free on some BitTorrent file sharing website. Education should be free but that's not how big business sees it. Regardless, we will continue to monitor the situation and continue to make future posts about this topic. In the meantime, here is a website that offers electronic text for textbooks.

How to make extra money on sKoolBoY?

If you already sold your books and you are spending the summer bored and want to make a little extra money, listen carefully.

You can make money by selling items on sKoolBoY and make a very good profit. If you are wondering how you can do this and you do not have items to sell, do not worry. There are plenty of websites out there that you can use to sell their items. For example, I released a previous post about selling textbooks and dropshipping websites. The latter would be used in this case. Dropshipping involves using another websites products and selling it on another website. Seller's on Ebay, Amazon, and other E-commerce websites do this all the time, especially powersellers on Ebay. How do you think they have a constant supply of items? They are using a dropshipper or they have a supplier that dropships stuff for them or they buy it from them at a cheap price. I recently learned that you can buy prepaid cellphones on Ebay and sell them as unlocked phones. This is possible because all you have to do is insert your SIM card and the phone will continue using the same service you were using before. Target cells a certain prepaid Motorola C168i phone for $15 and these phones easily sell for $20-$25 on Ebay. Imagine if you were selling hundreds or even thousands of these phones everyday. Let's say you make $5 profit off of 600 phones sold. That is $3000 dollars. Imagine the possibilities. That is just one example. They are websites out there that offer dropshipping for brand name items at low prices but you must be aware of the shipping they charge so that you do not lose profit from paying their shipping charges. Go to Google and type dropshipping and see what websites come up. You can sign up on these websites for a trial period and if you like it, pay for the membership. I also recommend going to Google to search for websites that sell cellphones, laptops, or any other item that you see can make a profit online. For example, search for cheap cellphones, refurbished laptops, or warehouse items. Make sure to price the item appropriately when listing it online. For example, if the item is selling for $5 on the dropshipping website, do not try to sell it for $45. That is unreasonable and you will probably lose potential buyers. Make sure to price it competitively.

If you have any questions or would like to speak to a representative at sKoolBoY about this, email us at support@skoolboy.com.

E3 Conference

From what I heard, there is not much going on except for a few announcements of games and extra things to buy for each console. In my opinion, the other consoles probably have to scramble and figure out how to compete with the Wii because they are blowing away the competition. There are more games on the Wii that are fun to play over and over than other games on the other consoles. For example, if you have a Wii, you definitely or must have Super Mario Brawl, Mario Strikers, Wii sports, Mario Kart, Prince of Persia, Super Mario Galaxy, Paper Mario, Metroid Prime, Twilight Princess, and the other old nintendo games you can download like Gunstar Heroes, Super Mario Bros, Ocarina of Time, and more. There are just way more fun games to play on the Wii with its innovative controller than the Xbox 360 or PS3. PS3 games like Grand Theft Auto or Halo are great but they quickly become boring after you beat it. Nintendo games like the ones mentioned before can be played over and over with the same enthusiasm as when you first bought the game. Nintendo games are just well made and Sony and Xbox need to find more of these games so they do not have to release another version of Halo or Grand Theft Auto so people will continue to buy their consoles.

Auction End Times- September?

If you noticed, several of the auctions on the website have auctions that will be ending in September or in August, etc. This does not mean that if you bid now, you have to wait till then. Actually, if you bid on the auction now, the timer will reset to 1 week or 7 days. In some cases, you can end the auction immediately if you use the 'buy it now' option or by making the seller an offer. If you have any more questions about this or other things concerning the website, do not hesitate to email us at support@skoolboy.com.

sKoolBoY Field Trip- Dark Knight

We are going to see the Dark Knight on Friday and if you are a member of sKoolBoY or not a member, you can still participate in the blog as we will discuss the movie. We hope to see you there.

sKoolBoY Sponsored Summer Trips/Field Trips?

Summer is almost over but we want to go out with a bang or at least with some excitement. The staff at sKoolBoY is thinking about sponsoring a summer field trip where members that live close to one another will go to the movies, Dave and Busters, Beach, etc. Afterwards, a topic relating to that specific trip will be created on the blog and everyone can comment about what happened on their specific field trip. If you are interested in participating, please email us at contact@skoolboy.com or if you have ideas about trips, tell us about it.

July Newsletter- 7.15.08

How is everyone's summer going? sKoolBoY is continuing to grow and we continue to evolve as well. Over the past couple of weeks, we have added some new categories such as Solutions Manuals, Dorm Posters, and reintroduced DVDs to the site. We have also created a special category called Bid on a Private Tutor. If you are going to use the category 'Bid on a Private Tutor,' then you should scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on the link that says 'how to bid on a Private Tutor.'

The sKoolBoY blog is updated daily with new information from the site and other random stories found on the internet. Don't forget to check that out. Very Funny Stuff.

We are proud to announce that the sKoolBoY group page on Facebook has reached 165 members and continues to grow everyday. The sKoolBoY profile page is doing just as good at 866 members and growing everyday. We hope to reach as many people on Facebook as possible since they are our base.

On a side note, we have started a charitable initiative to donate 15% of all site earnings to organizations that deal with juvenile delinquency, drug abuse among teens, and orphaned teens. This is an ambitious initiative but we look to tackle it because kids are the future. We hope by improving their circumstances we will better able them to facilitate a brighter future for others. We will donate 15% of all site earnings if the number of users on the site reaches ten thousand members or the Facebook group page reaches one million members. Please help tell others about this initiative by inviting others to our Facebook group page or by telling others to sign up on our site.

We are still hiring interns for the summer and into upcoming Fall/Spring Semesters. If you would like to become an intern, please email us at jobopp@skoolboy.com.
We know you do not want to hear this but (whisper) school is right around the corner. Ahhh!!! We know that is a nightmare for some and beautiful music to some people's ears. Either way, we just want to remind you to check the site for your textbooks or sell your textbooks and other stuff to students who will be visiting the site before school starts.

That's all the happenings for this month and next month, based on how business negotiations go with a certain firm, we may have a big announcement either next month or in the coming months. Stay tuned and continue to check the site everyday for new listings or new categories that are created. Remember: Users can suggest categories to the site. Peace.

Completely Unrelated (C.U)- Dark Knight comes out in three days!!! Go see it, we will be there. We are thinking about sponsoring some sort of summer activity. If you are interested and live in the Miami, FL area, then send us an email at contact@skoolboy.com. If you do not live in the Miami area, you can still participate but in your respective cities and we can talk about the activity on the blog afterwards. If you have an idea for some sort of activity, tell us about it.

Minor Addition to Registration on the Site

We added a new section called referral that asks "How did you find out about sKoolBoY?". You must fill this out to complete registration.

Follow up: Charitable Initiative

Forgot to add this in the previous post. The organizations that will benefit from this are located in the Miami, FL area.

Charitable Initiative: We do it for the kids

sKoolBoY is proud to announce this new charitable initiative. We are pledging to donate 15% of all site earnings to organizations that deal with juvenile delinquency, drug abuse among teens, and orphaned teens. We will do this if the number of site members reaches 10,000 members by or before January 1, 2009. Also, we will meet this goal if the number of members on our Facebook page hits 1,000,000 members by or before 1-1-09. To participate in this initiative, sign up today on the website for free at sKoolBoY or go to the facebook group page.

Don't do this for us, do it for the all the disadvantaged kids out there. Everyone has a relative or knows someone out there who is a troubled teen. Help them Today.

Are you Bored? Here are some Ideas....

I just stumbled upon some sites for both sexes. If you are a girl or a guy who likes to shop or share ideas about stuff you have purchased, you should check out kaboodle.com. It's a cool site where you can share ideas with other consumers and join groups of people with similar taste in clothing, etc. Another site that could be for girls and guys but mostly guys is 4chan.org. The great thing about this site is that you do not even have to register on this site to participate. On the site, you can post pictures and make comments about topics ranging from anime to games to random stuff people find on the internet. If you have other interesting websites that you have found on the internet and would like to share, feel free to leave a comment here.

1 Week Until the Dark Knight!!!

I can't wait to see this movie, it looks awesome and heath ledger looks like he nailed the part of the Joker. The movie is almost three hours. So far, the movie has 100% on Rottentomatoes.com, which is good. I may not be one of those people who see it on Thursday at Midnight but I will see it in the first few days for sure. This movie is going to be awesome. If you haven't seen the first one, definitely check it out. Christian Bale has definitely proven himself to be a very good actor. Heath Ledger unfortunately was not able to continue his great acting career and I am sure he will only add to his lasting legacy after this film is seen by millions of people.

New Apple Iphone 3G

Everybody is so giddy about this phone and they should not be because there was always be upgrades and you will have to buy another phone which is ridiculous. Just get yourself a simple phone and call it a day. There is no reason to break your back standing up to get this phone because they will have plenty in the days and weeks after 7/11. If you are standing in line right now, you are crazy. Buy a $20 phone and save yourself the madness of being frustrated with Apple's buy and upgrade scandal. Yeah, the phone has cool features but so will the upgrade and the one after that, etc. It costs less money but its not worth the wait or the price tag. Keep it simple and get a cheap phone.

New Category added to sKoolBoY: AP Tests

We are glad to introduce the new category: AP Tests which should be found under the general category of books and standardized testing. This category was added to further accommodate high school students who also visit the site and are looking for these type of college preparatory books. Now, go out there and get a 5 or your money back. Ok, maybe that is not guaranteed but you definitely will buying these books on our site at a discount compared to other bookstores. The Kaplan books are selling for close to $10. These books are quickly bid on or bought immediately. Take advantage of this opportunity before the AP Tests comes around.

Go Rafa!!! Vamos!!! Felicidades!!!

Rafael Nadal finally won Wimbledon which was three years in the making. It was a great match and I believe they are replaying it right now on ESPN classic. Check it out. I actually thought he might lose because he squandered match points and then there was another rain delay which was frustrating. I actually went somewhere and missed the rest of the fifth set after the rain delay which sucks. I thought Nadal was losing faith but he found the mental strength to get through the fifth set and took away the title from Federer who did not look too disappointed to be beaten by Rafa. I guess he thought he was beaten down and the better man won. The whole humble thing is great between the two players but they need to spice it up a little and talk some trash like the days of Muhammed Ali- The Greatest. Those were the days...when athletes such as Ali would speak his mind regardless of the consequences. It is so unfortunate that they have the platform to do so but refuse to speak things that truly matter to them and not what others want them to sponsor. More athletes need to become more proactive socially if not politically.
