Hey! Stop that Goat!!!- Funny Story of the Week

Courtesy of African Path Village

Police in Nigeria are holding a goat on suspicion of attempted armed robbery.

Vigilantes took the black and white beast to the police saying it was an armed robber who had used black magic to transform himself into a goat to escape arrest after trying to steal a Mazda 323.

The wrong animal in custody: Actual Police mugshot of Arrested Suspect

"The group of vigilante men came to report that while they were on patrol they saw some hoodlums attempting to rob a car. They pursued them. However one of them escaped while the other turned into a goat," Kwara state police spokesman Tunde Mohammed told Reuters by telephone.

"We cannot confirm the story, but the goat is in our custody. We cannot base our information on something mystical. It is something that has to be proved scientifically, that a human being turned into a goat," he said.

Belief in witchcraft is widespread in parts of Nigeria, Africa's most populous nation. Residents came to the police station to see the goat, photographed in one national newspaper on its knees next to a pile of straw.

Four Reasons Why Your Tuition is Increasing

1. Your State has decided to cut the amount of money that is usually allocated for students each year. For example, Your state may have allocated $5,500 per student and now they have cut that amount to $4900.

2. Some of universities have been reigning in spending but other 'flagship' universities have increased spending per student. Some of this spending could be due to increased services such as student security due to the unfortunate occurrence of student shootings.

3. Schools have increased spending on administrative, maintenance, and student services. They are paying professors more, adding more student centers, etc.

4. If you go to a big private university, they have increased prices because they have increased their spending habits. They have been spending more because of the increased tuition and money pouring in from endowments.

Maybe prices will start to go down as the economic status quo will cause all universities to cut back on spending?

This is based on this article.

Student Businesses Honorable Mentions!!!

We felt bad for leaving out other student businesses that we thought were worthy of being covered on the blog. Now, we wanted to cover good student businesses especially those with a professional website and those who had an interesting idea. Also, we wanted to cover a business in a different industry each day. For example, Monday(Life Sciences), Tuesday(Food/Confection), Wednesday(Education), Thursday(Entertainment), and Friday(Ecommerce). Some of the businesses that were not mentioned overlapped with another business from the same industry.

Here is the List of Businesses that were Left Out:

1. Easybib.com- Really cool website if you are looking for a quick way to get a MLA citation and other citations for books, websites, magazines, you name it. Everyone hates writing works cited after spending hours writing a paper.

2. Syllabuscentral.com- Have you Ever Missed the 1st day of class? Of Course, nobody is perfect. In that case, this website provides syllabuses for classes all over the country enter your university, search for the professor, and print out the syllabus.

3. University Tees- This website is great if you run a club or just need some custom made t-shirts. They do silk screening for shirts, stitching for hats, etc.

4. YoDcards.com- If you love playing poker and would love to personalize your own deck of cards, this site is great for doing that. Just submit a .jpg file and you are ready to go. The prices are really cheap and you get a minimum of four decks.

5. The-writing-center.com- This website is great,BUT they charge a ridiculous amount of money for their services. They must be the BEST editors in the world, who knows? If you are down to the wire, bitting off finger nails and you need that A and have the cash, why not?

Yes We Can!

In just a few days, President-Elect Obama will become President Barack Obama and we will hopefully usher in a new administration that brings about smart policies and great changes to this country. President-Elect Obama hopes that we all can come together to help support his policies and we at sKoolBoY will do whatever is necessary to spread his message of unity. We hope that he is successful at initiating all his policies and hope this country can again be respected as a great power. We would like to remind everyone that HBO will be broadcasting a free concert on Sunday, so check that out and ask your local service provider. If you are going to the inauguration on Tuesday, feel free to comment about your feelings about seeing the first African-American President be inaugurated. This is a special time in our history. Hopefully, other minorities see this as an opportunity to make great strides and break down more barriers in years to come.

Shop and Save the Environment- Go Captain Planet!

We are sad that this is the last business we have to highlight but life goes on. We will put out a list of honorable mentions tomorrow because there are just so many student businesses to talk about.

sKoolBoY presents the environmental oriented business named CarbonCart. This website allows you to buy items on their site through Amazon and buy carbon credits that can be used for some environmental purpose. Let's elaborate...

Founders: (The Team)

The students came up with the CarbonCart concept last year. The for-profit CarbonCart LLC business was created and is owned by Probus, 19, a business administration student from Sammamish; and Ryan Tilton, 19, a computer science student from Duvall. Joining them on the project are Laura Hanes, 19, a marketing student from Bonney Lake; and Kevin McFarland, 18, a student from Bellevue who is studying economics and classics.
They're drawing in part on Tilton's experience as an entrepreneur, which is already extensive despite his age. By his count, CarbonCart is his fifth venture. He started as a teenager selling audio subwoofers, and later tried portable hard drives. In addition, he ran an e-commerce site called stockthat.com, which provided some insights and lessons the students are now applying to CarbonCart"
Description: (How it Works)

CarbonCart.com is an eco-conscious e-commerce site carrying online retail giant Amazon.com's entire product inventory that allows consumers to carbon neutralize their internet shopping. By placing their orders for Amazon products through CarbonCart.com, consumers can purchase carbon credits to pay for renewable energy initiatives, reforestation or energy efficiency projects that offset the carbon dioxide generated in the shipping of their purchases. CarbonCart.com is an environmentally friendly way to shop online. Offering millions of products through Amazon.com, CarbonCart.com offsets 100% of the CO2 produced by each package it ships. At checkout, customers choose which type of carbon offset project they wish to support.

What we Think: This is a really cool website. We usually do not like to give our competitors a boost but since this site is so environmentally conscious and doing a great service to the earth, we will put aside our differences. The site uses Amazon so they have an extensive selection with customer reviews and detailed product information. It is really clean looking and great.

Go Green!

Funny Video of the Week- How not to Play Dead?!

The internet is full of great stuff and so if we find something worth posting we will make that picture, article, video, etc of the week. This video is hilarious, we had to post this. Check it out.

Site Description:
Scripped offers videos written and produced by the Internet audience. They are a community of over 9,000 writers that have posted nearly 12,000 scripts for both features and web shorts.

sKoolBoY Assessment:
We think this site is interesting and really useful for anybody who is looking to make a video for a class project, a video for their website, and more. The amount of people on this site is impressive. They offer script editing services but they are sort of pricey. Otherwise, this site encourages creativity and is full of creative writing professionals and should be a great website to pool writing talent from in years to come.

~Never Have Writers Block Again~

[5ive]: Ways To Always Look Your Best {on the GO} by TrulyBeautifulOnline.Com

We all have those days where we just don't care how we look or what anyone has to say about it. Those days where you don't even mind leaving the house in sweats, hair undone - looking a mess. We have all been there, so there is no shame in admitting it!

Yet, have you ever been caught looking thoroughly unpolished in public, by a friend you haven't seen in ages? All of a sudden, that "I don't give a ----" attitude goes out the window and all kinds of shame kick in. That kind of embarrassment is a horrible feeling! Wait... here is the holy grail of embarrassment...

You're in Publix browsing the ice cream aisle in your pajamas (or what might as well be pajamas... yes, Vickie's PINK counts as pajamas), when all of a sudden you see a great-looking guy, who is impeccably dressed. You want to flirt, but all of a sudden realize you appear to be a bum.

Basically, some opportunities only knock once, so don't be caught unprepared to answer the door!

You might be in college with an amazing internship, but face the facts - if you look like a bum, people will perceive you as such, regardless. It's human nature to make an assessment of people you meet based on your first impression, which includes how people are dressed.

It's hard to look your best 24/7. Lord knows I went on a late-night run to Burger King the other day in my pajamas. Did I care at the time? No. But I was definitely ashamed. I was praying my car wouldn't break down, etc. so I wouldn't have to be seen by a soul. It was not a good feeling. I vowed after that to make sure I never feel that way again.

Here are 5 ways to always look your best on the go. Even if you might not have time to primp and preen, that is no excuse to not look presentable.

1. Always Have an Beauty 911 Kit: Every woman should have these things in her purse/bag at all times. Get a little, cute makeup bag to keep everything organized and portable. Make sure you have extras of your products specifically for this kit.

  • Mascara
  • Lip gloss or balm (one or two... or several in my case...)
  • Blush or bronzer
  • Body spray or a perfume sample
  • Breath mints or gum
  • Oil blotting sheets

This way, even if you leave your house in a rush, you can quickly fix yourself up on the way to your destination (never while driving though)!

2. Plan your outfits in advance: If you plan your daily outfits from at least the night before, accessories and all, you reap several benefits. You can afford to hit the snooze button one more time. Also, you have the added confidence that comes with knowing you are well put together. Life is too short to spend time worrying about why you didn't put more effort into your appearance, especially when something as simple as planning ahead can save you that stress.

3. Buy cute "bum-wear": To avoid potential embarrassing situations, purchase cute yet comfortable lounge wear. You can buy a nice sweatsuit or "comfy" jeans and some nice hoodies so that even if you don't feel like being dressed to the nines to go to the store, you will always look presentable. Note: Say peace out to your ratty high school P.E. uniform. It is NOT okay to wear that in the streets!

4. Stand up straight: Listen to what Grandma told you. Even if you were to wear the ratty, 7 year old P.E. uniform, if you were standing up straight you might look like you were trying to rock a new style. Confidence makes anything look good. Yet, it's hard to be confident when you know you are not presenting yourself to the world as the fabulous chica that you are. I have posture issues because of my scoliosis, but I try to make a constant effort to keep my shoulders back. It has to be a conscious decision to do this.

5. Try to keep a positive attitude: A smile does a lot for one's appearance. Now, I know that nobody is happy at all times. It's impossible. Sometimes mustering up a tiny smile can seem the most gargantuan of tasks. I'm not saying that you should be fake either, but trying your best to accentuate the positive in your life goes a long way. You will feel better and others will feel better about being in your presence. Also, it's free! As India Arie so wisely sung, "It doesn't cost a thing to smile. You don't have to pay to laugh." Hell, even that notion should make you smile with gas prices as high as they are!

Follow these 5 principles and you are guaranteed to feel better about yourself at all times. Again, life is too short to worry about not looking your best!

Zinch allows students to showcase themselves to colleges in a way that truly represents who they are, what they do, and how well they do it. Colleges want to find. Students want to be found. Zinch allows this discovery to take place.

sKoolBoY Assessment:

We think that this is a great website to use to give yourself more options and leverage when applying to schools around the country. And Yes, You are not just a NUMBER! Showcase yourself at Zinch Today! It's a Zinch!

Life after College- Wait Get an Internship First

If you are looking for that great job after you finish college, you should seriously consider doing a paid or unpaid internship to gain more job experience and have something to pad your resume. Doing big time internships with respected companies, sets you apart from other students applying to jobs. Some of the best internships turn into future jobs later on. Apply to internships now if you are serious about getting into an internship during the summer because other people are applying as this is being written. GO!

Where can you look for these great internships?

-You should talk to other students who have done internships, ask your professors about internships, and go to your school's career center.

-Or you could go online and check out websites such as MonsterTrak that allow you to search for internships and entry-level jobs.

-Also, Some of the best internships are international internships because they function as a vacation and internship. So when you are thinking about that internship, why not do an internship in Venice, Italy?

Finding Your Inner Beauty by TrulyBeautifulOnline.Com

Young women the world over spend hundreds of hours and millions of dollars scouring magazines and crowded department store beauty counters on their never-ending mission of conforming to the standards of beauty set by the fashion and advertising world. Although many cannot fathom this revelation - real beauty does not lie in a tube of lip gloss, or in any glamorous packaging for that matter. True beauty is a sparkle in your eye, a bounce in your step, a positive attitude, a healthy body and inner confidence that comes from knowing that you are a beautiful child of God (or whichever higher power you believe in). Although many people feel that when you look good, you feel good, I truly believe that most people have to feel good on the inside to be motivated to look good. The focus should be on your inner beauty before you obsess over your outward appearance.

Inner beauty is hard to achieve in this stressful world because of the demands of school, work, family and relationships. Today, young women feel pressure to reach the highest levels of success so that they can get a college degree and provide for their families one day. Young women of color have additional stresses because this country is not yet free of the shackles of ignorance, prejudice or sexism. However, in all cultures there are employers that tell us that we are not experienced enough, colleges that tell us we aren't smart enough, men that batter our self-esteem, "friends" that do not have your best interest at heart and insecure people that try to bring us down to their level (better known as "haters").

Although it is sometimes hard to realize, each and every one of us has the potential to reach the point of self-acceptance that comes with realizing that we are beautiful no matter what we look like on the outside (Yes, even on bad hair days, fat days and when you are rocking your rattiest sweats) and no matter what anybody else thinks about you.

Fight the stereotypes and images that have been subliminally placed in your head by Hollywood and Madison Avenue. Skinny can be beautiful, but it is not the only beautiful body shape. Hair in all textures and styles is beautiful as long as it makes you feel like your best you. Most importantly, all skin complexions are beautiful despite the centuries-long stigma and "colorism" that was planted within Black societies to tear us apart.

Fight the negativity that can surround and overtake you. Although the going may be tough, remember why you are working so hard. Make sure to set goals for yourself and follow through with each of them to the best of your ability, despite the people who tell you that it can't be done. If you set your mind and heart to something positive, you will achieve success. They key is a mixture of believing in yourself, hard work, preparation, persistence and faith. Knowing that you posses boundless potential will give you inner confidence that shines through.

Fight the urge to sacrifice your needs to make other people happy. Young women tend to put others first neglect themselves for two main reasons. The first reason is that they have an insatiable drive for achievement. However, remember that you define your own success, not others. Another reason is that they have a fear of disappointing people. Learn how to say "no" and mean it. One person cannot do everything. There is only so much weight that you can place on your shoulders before you fall to your knees. It is key to remember that you can't take on the burdens of other people, no matter how much you want to help, if you have not put your own life together first.

In addition, stress is not sexy. It is not the latest on the catwalks in Paris or Bryant Park. Proper planning and organization of your life can help you to achieve a proper balance and reduce the everyday stress in your life. You must make sure to plan time for eating healthy meals, sleep, exercise and "me time" each and every day between classes, work and other activities. Young women of the world, take note. You must invest time in yourselves. Take the time to develop a hobby, learn a language or read novels. There can only be one you, so make yourself the best that you can be.

They say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but nobody on this earth can deny beauty of a person that emanates it from within.

January Newsletter- Happy New Year!

Hey Everyone, How's Your Break Going or School? We are going to combine November and December into this Newsletter.

Basically, we have been pretty busy over the last few weeks. Trying to get the sKoolBoY site ready for the new semester. At the same time, the old site will continue to run to avoid messing up anyone's sales. We have been making strides lately with partnerships with sites such as WyzAnt.com which is a great source if you are looking for a tutor in your area. Snag-A-Job.com which is a great source for finding that great part-time job while you go to school and possibly build a career off of that experience. CollegeGrad.com which is great for finding internships and jobs. There are others as well that we will place on the site or blog. We want to make sure students using our site get great service and content. We understand that students not only need great service but great information to go along with that service. We will continue to make posts on the blog or site about scholarships, jobs, internships, apartment listings, and any other pertinent information that will be useful to our users and others who use our site.

Our Raffle promotion has been successful with winners being announced since September. If you are new to the site, go to the site and sign up today to be entered into our monthly raffles.

Recession Proof Job for Students

For Free Professional Advice about starting your business-

Send us an email at startyourbusiness@skoolboy.com.

We here at sKoolBoY love student entrepreneurs and would like to encourage students in High schoool, College or even younger to follow through on any ideas you might have that might better improve society. Did you realize that entrepreneurs or small businesses are responsible for a lot of the job creation in the U.S.? Therefore, if you have an idea but are not sure how to follow through on the idea, make sure to get in contact with business professionals through your local SBA. Or if you are in college, try and see if there is a department in the business school that tries to help entreprenurs or is possibly hosting a business plan competition. When starting a business, one of the most important things to keep in mind is having a solid strategy or goal for your business that is easily identifiable. For example, Facebook is a business that is great at connecting friends all over the world and makes it revenue through ad placements on the site. So, make sure that you can provide a valuable service to people and convince them that it is worth their time using. Several people start a business thinking they will become instant MILLIONAIRES just because they opened a store on the web that sells shoes. Sure, there are some sites that were on the internet since it blew up in the 90's and they have become successful now because of the principle of first entry in the market. But, all good and successful businesses have a good/great product with a clear vision. If you are starting a business, make sure you know how you are going to make money, if you are even interested in making money in the first place. If you just want to create a great free service for people to take advantage of, that is great too. A lot of businesses stall because people think they need thousands or millions of dollars to get started or launch the idea. This is NOT true. We started skoolboy.com by outsourcing the creation of the website for a discounted price instead of paying the $5,000 to $15,000 dollars that most developers quoted. If outsourcing is still too expensive, try to network and find someone who shares the same passion as you (not easy) or a friend to help split the expenses. Remember: You just need to make a prototype or something tangible f or investors to see and get an idea of your business in order to get the ball rolling. More importantly, don't think that just because your business is not successful intially that you are a failure. All businesses go through transitions and morph in some way or another. So before you give up, try and think if you could tweak your business a little to give it an extra boost especially if there is some interest out there. The next thing is getting your business out there by marketing it. A great way to market your business is to form partnerships with other businesses that attract similar visitors. An example would be website that sells bicycles might partner with a website that sells helmets, knee pads, etc. All you have to do is send the owner of that business an email asking to place a widget, banner, etc on your site. These days the internet is all about content. CONTENT IS KING. Also, people on the internet like to see that you are affiliated with other websites especially well-known websites (if possible), it gives you status and legitimacy. All of this applies to internet business or brick and mortar stores.

[True Self]: New Year, Better You

From TrulyBeautifulOnline.com

Every year, when the glimmering crystal ball drops at the stroke of midnight, we all tell ourselves that we will finally live our lives the way we really want to - on our own terms. Many people resolve to do all of the things they wanted to do and didn't get a chance to, such as skydiving, going on a road trip or reading the Bible from cover to cover (my resolution for the past 5 years and counting). People also resolve to spend more time with loved ones, make bold career moves and get in shape. However, despite our amazing intentions on January 1st, do we ever really stick to our goals and resolutions?

www.43things.com is a really neat Web site that I found that makes it a little bit easier to hang tough with your goals, with a healthy mix of peer pressure, positive thinking and self fulfilling prophecy. All you have to do is sign up to join the community of fellow goal-setters and make a list of your goals. From there, you can write journal entries about your progress, update your list and view the goals and resolutions of thousands of people across the world! How cool is that?

I started my own page and hopefully I will have much more success in meeting my goals from 2008 than in previous years. I hope that you find it helpful too.

Here are some other tips to make it easier to achieve your New Year's resolutions:

  • Set measurable goals (i.e. "I want to lose ten pounds in 6 months")
  • Make sure that you have a plan for goals that are harder to achieve, such as getting into grad school. Do your research on schools, buy a book or sign up for a Kaplan course and work hard. Setting the goal is just the first step.
  • Find people you know who also have the same goals. Hitting the gym together or studying at the library with company will make your goals seem more achievable.

I wish everyone only the best in 2008. It is a new year brimming with all the potential in the world. It's your job to make it happen!

The Valuable Four

Having a relationship involves team work between you and your partner. I feel there is four things you should follow in a serious relationship and they are COMMUNICATION, HONESTY, TRUST, COMMITMENT. I believe those four things are very important to having a strong relationship. Also, knowing that having these valuable things in your relationship losing one could weaken the others. For instance, say that you are in a strong relationship that has lasted for about 9 months and there hasn't been any serious problems during that time you were together. Then all of a sudden you find out your partner is cheating on you and you have all the evidence to prove it too. So out of the four key things I believe a relationship works off of two are broken and they are trust and commitment. Trust is broken because all that time you thought your partner was faithful now you can't trust that he/she is anymore. Commitment is broken because your partner supposedly cheated on you disrespecting the commitment you guys had. As result if you think about it half of the bridge you guys made in your relationship is broken now and will be difficult and challenging to rebuild. So just keep in mind having a relationship takes two not one and breaking any of the key "four" harms your potential for a long lasting relationship.

Top 5 Reasons to Stop Switching Your Major

(Picture from Total Recall~)

What is the right major for you? It may be in Business, Science Major, Math Major, whatever. You just need to pick one and stick with it.

Here are 5 reasons why you need to stick with just one:

1. Once you switch your major once, you are likely to do it again and then it becomes a habit. Before you know it, you are on your 4th major?! and you are graduating 2 years later. Not good! Stick with 1.

2. Just Because you are in that major does not mean you will be taking only classes in that major. You will always be able to take other classes that you are more interested in as electives so stick with 1 major instead of Jumping AROUND all over the campus major board.

3. Ok, let's say you are a Biology major (Snooze...). You hate reading and want to switch to English. This major is easier but now you have to take a million writing classes and that means writing several papers for different classes and you are reading even MORE. That is time consuming and you are giving yourself more work. That was one example but the point is that switching does not always make the SUFFERING go away.

4. You might be switching into a major that a MILLION other students are switching into as well. That means when you graduate and are looking for a job, you and 50 million other students JUST LIKE YOU have the same qualifications and that makes you just another Job Seeker.

5. Let's say you hate your major with a passion, you switch it to something more to your liking. But then you realize that the major you thought you liked, you do not like as much. You just wasted a year or two of your college years, money, and life just because you did not like your major with a PASSION. In most cases, but not all, You will never like all aspects of your major or career, but you need to find something about the major that you like and use that motivation to stick with it.

When your Major is Sucking, Stick With It~
