Movie Recommendation for the Week!

The Movie Recommendation for the upcoming week is....

DayBreakers!!!

Well actually, this movie is coming out on Jan.8th but it is definitely something to look forward to.

The movie stars Ethan Hawke from Gattica and Training Day. It's 2017 and the undead (vampires) outnumber humans. The humans have been supplying the undead with blood but this supply is decreasing and therefore, the undead must do something to make up for this dwindling blood supply.

Here is a Trailer. Enjoy!

Are you Bored?

Movie Recommendation for the Week!

The Movie that you should look forward to seeing is....

Sherlock Holmes.

So far, it has a 69% rating on RottenTomatoes. It has gotten good reviews and any movie with Robert Downey Jr is worth watching. The movie is a mix of action and comedy. It portrays Sherlock Holmes in a different light by demonstrating his toughness as well as intelligence.

Check It Out. Here is the Trailer.

Movie Recommendation for the Week!

The movie to check out for the upcoming week is.....

AVATAR!!!!

This movie is supposed to be AWESOME. The reviews for it are very good.

Here is a synopsis of the film:

Avatar is the story of an ex-Marine who finds himself thrust into hostilities on an alien planet filled with exotic life forms. As an Avatar, a human mind in an alien body, he finds himself torn between two worlds, in a desperate fight for his own survival and that of the indigenous people.

So far, it has a 90% rating on RottenTomatoes, I would continue to monitor this until it is released.

Book Recommendation: The Four Steps to Epiphany

For students thinking about starting a business or anyone else. This is a MUST read. It gives great advice about how to go about starting a business and evaluating your success along the way. It talks about the MVP (Minimum Viable Product) which is a way to demonstrate your business is viable without expending too much money to do so. Once, you have realized that your business is profitable after building the MVP, you can add on to that and continue to expand. The book is really good.

Skoolboy gives this 2 Thumbs Up!

Movie Recommendation for the Week!

Everyone needs to check out...

Lovely Bones!!!!

This movie has an interesting concept. The main character is killed and she observes her murderer and her family from Heaven. She helps her family solve the mystery of her murder. It sort of reminds me of that Robin Williams movie when he dies and tries to find his wife who committed suicide and wants to bring her back to Heaven. This movie is based on a book by Alice Sebold.

It has a middle of the road rating of 52% on Rotten Tomatoes. But, I think its worth a look.

Losing is Everything

What a lot of people do not realize is that starting a business or becoming a successful business person is about learning to fail over and over again before you succeed.

Here is a great article about how "Why Losing a B-school Competition is Better than Winning?" -huh? Yeah, it sounds counter-intuitive but try to keep an open mind about it.

Spotify- iTunes Killer?

Maybe?...but this is an interesting application that is not yet available in the U.S.

Here is an excerpt of its capabilities:

"Expected to launch stateside sometime in 2010, Spotify represents the next revolution in mobile music. Instead of purchasing and owning individual tracks, this subscription-based service lets you stream music to your mobile device. And unlike similar mobile music apps, Spotify lets you pick exact songs from a catalog of millions which instantly sync to your mobile device. It even works without an Internet connection. Spotify goes where iTunes has not, and makes music more of a web-based experience than something requiring disk space on physical hard drives. In other words, Spotify represents the future of mobile music and a threat which Apple will soon need to address."

"We Don't Cut Prisons. Why do We Cut Education?"

This is the case in California right now with their education system which will have to bear a 500 million dollar cut to education funding. Some students are struggling to even find classes for their major.

How do you feel about this? California is not the only state cutting funding to education programs that will potentially eliminate certain majors altogether.

Movie Recommendation for the Week!

Ok. The movie to see this upcoming Friday is....

Brothers.

This might just be me but I think Toby Maguire trying to be serious is kinda funny. The fact that his real life friend, Jake Gyllenhaal, is playing the role of the friend who sleeps with his wife is funny.

The premise of the story is based off a foreign made film. Toby Maguire goes off to fight and is presumed dead. Jake swoops in and sleeps with his wife. Unfortunately, Toby shows up and starts to rage once he finds out Jake has been sleeping with his wife.

There is no consensus on the film yet, but so far it has a 60% rating on RottenTomatoes. This could change in either direction before Friday. So in the meantime, you can monitor this on the site.

This movie could be runner up for 2nd biggest comedy of the year, next to 2012.

Movie Recommendation(s) For the Week!

Ok. There is not much out there to speak of. I know this is offensive to fans of the Twilight Series and the new movie: New Moon.

But, the movie did not get a good review which I am sure will be disregarded heavily by fans.

So, I will recommend three movies and you can choose between them.

1. Blind Side- 68%
2. The Sun- 90%
3. Defamation- 90%

The percentages are the feedback that came from RottenTomatoes.

Also, check out the movie 2012. It may go down as the Biggest Comedy of the Year. (Irony)

Movie Recommendation For the Week!

The Movie that Everyone should see is...

Movie Recommendation For the Week!

It seems that this week, there is not much to talk about but the best reviewed movie was

The Men Who Stare at Goats

Consensus: Though The Men Who Stare at Goats is a mostly entertaining, farcical glimpse of men at war, some may find its satire and dark humor less than edgy.

Here is a Sneak Peek at Something Interesting: Prince of Persia Trailer!!!

Movie Recommendation For the Week!

Go see The House of the Devil! Here's why:

Consensus: Though its underlying themes are familiar, House of the Devil effectively sheds the loud and gory cliches of contemporary horror to deliver a tense, slowly building throwback to the fright flicks of decades past.

This consensus comes from RottenTomatoes.com- This movie received an 86% rating. Even though Halloween is over, you can still go and enjoy a scary movie.

Movie Recommendation for this week: Nightmare Before Christmas in 3D!

Ok. This movie is not new but it is being re-released in 3D!!!

Consensus: A stunningly original and visually delightful work of stop-motion animation.

Side Comment: I would also recommend Saw VI if you are current on the newest installment of the Saw series. The reviews are never spectacular but people still go to see what twists the movie has to offer.

Movie Recommendation for this Week: Black Dynamite

This movie is probably under the radar for most people, including me.

Consensus: A loving and meticulous send-up of 1970s blaxsploitation movies, Black Dynamite is funny enough for the frat house and clever enough for film buffs.

Here is the Trailer:

Must See Online Recommendation: Full Metal Alchemist : Brotherhood

I know this is not something I would usually blog about or even think of posting but I will make a post if I think its worth mentioning. If you watch anime or at least know what it is. You need to check out the revamped Full Metal Alchemist series called Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood which supposedly follows the Manga more closely. It is extremely good and just gets better every episode. It will not disappoint.

I watch all or most of my anime at NarutoWire, You can check it out there.

$250 Scholarship Topic Suggestions

There has been some confusion about what to write about for our $250 scholarship. The topic is 'How would you use Skoolboy?' Even though our slogan is books and stuff, if you think the site would be better suited for ipods, blackberries, laptops, or skateboards, write about those things. You do not have to write about how you would use the site based on how we have described it on the page.

If you are still confused, here are some topic suggestions:

1. I would use Skoolboy to perform real time searches for things being sold online right now....

2. I would use Skoolboy to do my homework.....(Not realistic but if you can describe it in such a way that sounds feasible, these are the things we like to read)

3. I would use Skoolboy to sell all my stuff and have them ship it for me....(Ok, thats asking for a lot but again if you can describe how it would work and make it feasible, we'd love to hear it)

These are just some ideas off the top of my head and if you would like to use them, we would not view your essay any different from another person. We care about content and quality.

Be creative and have fun with it!

If you still have questions, feel free to email us at scholarships@skoolboy.com.

If you are thinking of starting a business, this is a must see.

Saturday, August 1, 2009

FYI: Search, Save Time, and Buy Online

This is the time when most students panic and realize they need to buy books and sell other books from last semester if they have not done so already. Some of the common places students start to search include but not limited to are: Facebook Marketplace, Half.com, Amazon, and a myriad of other sites. These sites are all frequented by college students and other independent book sellers. Two great resources for researching the best prices all over the web instantaneously include gettextbooks.com and studentlistings.com. Still, these sites provide the lowest prices and not necessarily the best products. For example, you may find a book that is the best deal but the description of the book is as follows: "Cover is mangled, pages are frayed, coffee stains, etc." Therefore, it is important to visit these sites and read the description before purchasing the book. These sites are great because it alleviates the hours that would have been spent scouring the internet and the vast number of sites that sell textbooks.

Are the Rumors about Facebook Marketplace True?

I've been doing some research and it appears that Facebook Marketplace is not to be trusted. According to several users on Twitter, it seems that people are encountering scammers and fake listings. I personally have not used the service so I cannot completely make a judgment on it. Facebook Marketplace was put into place to directly compete with Craigslist.

If you have used Facebook Marketplace, please comment on your experience.

The Solution?

There are three essential qualities students want when it comes to textbooks:

1. Cheap Textbooks (Not breaking your bank account)

2. Reliable Service (Being able to get back money from bad sellers or security from bad buyers)

3. Selling Textbooks Back w/ Ease (Getting a decent price for books and selling it in a reasonable amount of time)

These three areas are essential for any successful business that wants to capture the college market. There are businesses that do this right to some degree. Still, some students continue to take the easy way out and sell back to the bookstore or not sell their books at all. This is somewhat puzzling considering the vast audience that will be available when books are placed online. There must some other attribute or quality that is missing. I wonder what it is?

College Marketplace

Is there really a true college marketplace out there? There are a plethora of websites to choose from that sell textbooks and have a huge inventory of books. Still, students can still end up spending over $300 or more on books for one semester and close to $600 for the entire year. This amount of money is still a little high for most students. Would a college marketplace of just students selling to each other solve this problem? I think so because students understand that other students are not loaded with cash so they would price their textbooks reasonably. Instead of looking for new or old textbooks sold by large companies who are only concerned about their bottom line, it would be better to buy from another student who wouldn't mind some extra cash for their book. A student would be less concerned about making a profit then getting rid of their book and making some money on it.

Can you Live without Your Cell Phone or Laptop?

Nowadays we are so distracted by our cell phone and laptop/desktop. I think we (Generation Y) and all others should take a step away from these coveted devices for a few minutes. I think it would greatly benefit anyone and help foster more communication between friends, family, and even strangers (oooh!) I think that we all have had that experience where we are talking to someone and they start texting someone while you are trying to tell them something. I personally think this is unsociable and a no no. Have you ever wondered why you do not know your classmates or at least people who sit around you? Its probably because you are too busy texting someone, refreshing facebook news feeds, checking on your 4 out of 198 friends on facebook, browsing, playing games, or sitting next to someone you arlready know (comfort zone), etc. People should detach themselves away from these devices because they are literally destroying this generation and possibly other generations social abilities. These devices have been used, in some cases, to avoid social confrontations and to ease social anxiety by appearing to be busy with looking at old text messages, 4,594 emails you should have already deleted, or texting someone that you could just call and speak with a few minutes to say what you need to say. So...the whole point of this is to bring back face to face interaction and more conversations in general instead of omg, lmfao, etc interactions that we are used to on day to day basis.

Ever Wonder: Things you think of when you're bored...

Why the sun lightens our hair, but darkens our skin?

Why women can't put on mascara with their mouth closed?

Why don't you ever see the headline "Psychic Wins Lottery"?

Why is "abbreviated" such a long word?

Why is it that doctors call what they do "practice"?

Why is it that to stop Windows, you have to click on "Start"?

Why is lemon juice made with artificial flavor, and dishwashing
liquid made with real lemons?

Why is the man who invests all your money called a broker?

Why is the time of day with the slowest traffic called rush hour?

Why isn't there mouse-flavored cat food?

When dog food is new and improved tasting, who tests it?

Why didn't Noah swat those two mosquitoes?

Why do they sterilize the needle for lethal injections?

You know that indestructible black box that is used on airplanes?
Wh
y don't they make the whole plane out of that stuff??

Why don't sheep shrink when it rains?

Why are they called apartments when they are all stuck together?

If con is the opposite of pro, is Congress the opposite of progress?

If flying is so safe, why do they call the airport the terminal?

In case you needed further proof that the human race is doomed through stupidity, here are some actual label instructions on consumer goods:

On a Sears hairdryer: Do not use while sleeping. ( that's the onl
y
time I have to work on my hair).

On a bag of Fritos:! ..You could be a winner! No purchase necessary.
Details inside. (the shoplifter special)?

On a bar of Dial soap: "Directions: Use like regular soap." (and
that would be how???....)

On some Swanson frozen dinners: "Serving suggestion: Defrost." (but,
it's "just" a suggestion).

On Tesco's Tiramisu dessert (printed on bottom): "Do not turn upside
down." (well...duh, a bit late, huh)!

On Marks & Spencer Bread Pudding: "Product will be hot after
heating." (...and you thought????...)

On packaging for a Rowenta iron: "Do not iron clothes on body." (but
wouldn't this save me more time?)

On Boot's Children Cough Medicine: "Do not drive a car or operate
machinery after taking this medication." (We could do a lot to
reduce
the rate of construction accidents if we could just get those 5-year-olds with head-colds off those forklifts.)

On Nytol Sleep Aid: "Warning: May cause drowsiness." (and.. .I'm
taking this because???....)

On most brands of Christmas lights: "For indoor or outdoor use
only.
(as opposed to...what?)

On a Japanese food processor: "Not to be used for the other use."
(now, somebody out there, help me on this. I'm a bit curious.)

On Sunsbury's peanuts: "Warning: contains nuts." (talk about a news
flash)

On an American Airlines packet of nuts: "Instructions: Open packet,
eat nuts." (Step 3: maybe, uh...fly Delta?)

On a child's superman costume: "Wearing of this garment does not
enable you to fly." (I don't blame the company. I blame the parents for this one.)

On a Swedish chainsaw: "Do not attempt to stop chain with your hands
or genitals." (..was there a lot of this happening somewhere?)

Only in America- Top 10

1. Only in America ....can a pizza get to your house faster than an ambulance.

2. Only in America ....are there handicap parking places in front of a skating rink.

3. Only in America ....do drugstores make the sick walk all the way
to the back of the store to get their prescriptions while healthy
people can buy cigarettes at the front

4. Only in America ....do people order double cheeseburgers, large
fries, and a diet coke.

5. Only in America ....do banks leave both doors open and then chain
the pens to the counters.

6. Only in America ....do we leave cars worth thousands of dollars
in the driveway and put our useless junk in the garage.

7. Only in America ....do we use answering machines to screen calls
and then have call waiting so we won't miss a call from someone we
didn't want to talk to in the first place.

8. Only in America ....do we buy hot dogs in packages of ten and

9. Only in America ....do we use the word 'politics' to describe the

Kindle: Will College Students Buy It?

I think the Kindle is a really good alternative for reading textbooks using a digital device. However, how many college students will buy into the Kindle? It is not that cool and it cost a lot of money. Let's say a college student were to buy a kindle and saved at least $300 or more from buying electronic versions of their textbooks. Great! But what if they lost the kindle. No! Now, they have not only lost the money used to buy the Kindle but the textbooks as well. They would have to buy the Kindle again, maybe, or just replace their textbooks. Either way, that is an expensive mistake. I have never used a Kindle myself and do not know how useful it is but I don't think that it is up to speed with college students just yet. Ultimately, I think the Kindle is doomed to be just another hot item for people who like new exciting products but not a game changer in terms of making the switch from hardcover to E-cover. Amazon does not even release figures on Kindle sales, why? And the price is too high for most college students who are strapped for cash these days. Therefore, the race is still hot for who will provide the best solution to help alleviate the pain college students face when paying ridiculous mark up prices at their college bookstores.

Ruckus has Ended

If you are a college student and loved getting free music from Ruckus, you are no longer able to do so. Ruckus has officially come to an end. They recently were required by another company and tried to manange a music service on Facebook but were denied in the end. As a result, the company has shutdown and students are sad to see it go. Personally, I have never used the service but I am sure a lot of students will mourn the loss of Ruckus. Not Ruckus from the Boondocks.

Doctors and Politics

An Israeli doctor says 'Medicine in my country is so advanced that we can take a kidney out of one man, put it in another, and have him looking for work in six weeks.'
A German doctor says 'That is nothing, we can take a lung out of one person, put it in another, and have him looking for work in four weeks.
A Russian doctor says 'In my country, medicine is so advanced that we can take half a heart out of one person, put it in another, and have them both looking for work in two weeks.
The Texas doctor, not to be outdone, says 'You guys are way behind, we recently took a man with no brains out of Texas, put him in the White House for eight years, and now half the country is looking for work.'

JuicyCampus is No More

JuicyCampus.com, a popular gossip website in which students from various institutions can post anonymously on any subject related to their school, decided to shut down, citing a loss of ad revenue caused by the recent economic downturn.

Matt Ivester, founder and CEO of JuicyCampus, said in a message posted on the website, “In these historically difficult economic times, online ad revenue has plummeted and venture capital funding has dissolved.” He went on to explain that the website grew too fast, and the company did not have the resources to “survive this economic downturn.”

The website, which Ivester always maintained was a forum for “light-hearted college gossip,” attracted criticism from parents, school officials, and many students when it was first unveiled in August 2007. It had “the simple mission of enabling online anonymous free speech on college campuses,” according to the now defunct website.

However, under the cover of anonymity, many students took the opportunity to post hate speech, racial slurs, and derogatory comments about professors or classmates.

Harold Respass, student body president at Winston-Salem State University, was quoted by WSII12, North Carolina, as saying, “I don’t let stuff that’s not true bother me,” after he was contacted by other school presidents in the state who were concerned about the website.

Last year, New Jersey authorities subpoenaed JuicyCampus as part of an investigation into the site, and whether or not it was breaking rules aimed at curbing the posting of abusive or obscene content. The website also faced a federal lawsuit filed by a University of Delaware student from New Jersey, who wanted to know the identity of anonymous posters who spread gossip about her on the site.

Two students have been arrested due to content posted on JuicyCampus, after state subpoenas forced the site to obtain the IP addresses of anonymous posters. One was released without charge, but the other, a student at Colgate University, was charged with second-degree aggravated harassment and later released on $1,000 bail.

In September, an editorial in The Hoya, a student newspaper at Georgetown University, called JuicyCampus a “dangerous and undesired element … a cancer to our community.”

The Georgetown Independent quoted Ivester as answering a question about people getting hurt by JuicyCampus, “It’s not my fault. I don’t feel guilty. It’s a forum where we allow people to say almost whatever they want. It would be on the people who made the post. If you don’t have to look at it, you’re bringing it on yourself. No one is forcing you to look at it. If we didn’t provide this forum, some other site would.”

Despite the negative backlash, the site seemed fairly popular. The site claimed over a million unique visitors every month from over 500 campuses.

In the letter posted on the website before it shut down, Ivester said, “And I’d like to thank everyone who has engaged in meaningful discussion about online privacy and internet censorship. JuicyCampus has raised issues that have passionate advocates on both sides, and I hope that dialogue will continue.”

Our Take

JuicyCampus.com will not be sorely missed, though neither is it a time to mutter “Good riddance.” Despite the high passions the site raised in many students and officials, from free speech advocates to those who were maligned by the site’s posters, the website was not a particularly interesting one. There are other websites that offer a channel for both the light-hearted gossip and the derogatory rumors that college students seem to enjoy so much. Facebook, for example.

3 Reasons Why You Did Not Get That Job

College students and recent graduates, have you been wondering why you can't seem to get that entry level job? Some of you may say it's the economy, and no one is hiring. Others may believe they don't have enough experience in the real world (consider an internship). Then, there are those who say you have a college degree and a good resume; you believe that is enough to get a job. Or, maybe there are other reasons your job search has been unsuccessful.

I came across a list of reasons that could explain why college students and graduates are not getting entry level jobs. Here are a few reasons to consider:

An unprofessional e-mail address - Come up with an address that employers will take seriously instead of as a joke.

Failing to write a post-interview thank you letter - This letter shows your appreciation for the interview time and serves as a reminder of your desire to have the job.

Bad-mouthing - During an interview, never talk negatively about previous employers or anyone else who works for them. If you do, a potential employer may see you as a bad influence on his or her company.

It's easy to blame someone or something for why you can't get an entry level job. Examine your job search, and see if you are making any mistakes that are affecting your progress. Sometimes the smallest things can make a big difference.

Wiggio- Great for Group Projects

The website seems pretty cool. They provide a bunch of tools for students to use that help them organize information online for group meetings. Here is some info from the press release:

College students now have their own Yammer. Last week, Wiggio came out of beta with a new look and a slew of group messaging and group management features. For each private group that you create, Wiggio provides a Twitter-like message stream from all the group members. But it also includes a slew of other features such as a shared calendar, mass text and voice messaging, file-sharing (including online docs and spreadheets), polling, and more.

Many of these features can be found in other products such as Yammer, Basecamp, WizeHive, and Producteev. But Wiggio is a solid addition to the group messaging family, and it is already gaining some traction by targeting college students and their particular group dynamics (academic, extracurricular, social, committees, sports teams, music/dance, religious, charity, etc.). Wiggio, which has been in closed beta for a year, already has 45,000 users, about 80 percent of which are college students and faculty members.

The site was created in January, 2008 by Dana Lampert, who was then a senior at Cornell. His two co-founders are Rob and Derek Doyle, sons of Bob Doyle, the creator of MacPublisher (the first desktop publishing program) and the 1970s electronic game Merlin. The elder Doyle is an adviser and investor in Wiggio, and houses the four-person startup in his lab a block away from Harvard. Wiggio raised $450,000 in an angel round last August.

The site offers following features:

  • Shared calendar (with SMS reminders)
  • Folder (includes group editing of docs and spreadsheets, photo sharing, video)
  • Mass text and voice messaging
  • Free conference calling and web meetings
  • Polling
  • List-serv

Groups can be created by simply adding people’s email. They don’t even have to sign up. Wiggio hooks into existing text messaging and email services. You can email an entire group, take group polls, import calendars, share documents, links, photos, videos, and other files. Wiggio uses Zoho and Scribd for shared document viewing and editing, and has partnered with Rondee for the teleconferencing. All the other features were developed in-house.

Hey! Stop that Goat!!!- Funny Story of the Week

Courtesy of African Path Village

Police in Nigeria are holding a goat on suspicion of attempted armed robbery.

Vigilantes took the black and white beast to the police saying it was an armed robber who had used black magic to transform himself into a goat to escape arrest after trying to steal a Mazda 323.

The wrong animal in custody: Actual Police mugshot of Arrested Suspect

"The group of vigilante men came to report that while they were on patrol they saw some hoodlums attempting to rob a car. They pursued them. However one of them escaped while the other turned into a goat," Kwara state police spokesman Tunde Mohammed told Reuters by telephone.

"We cannot confirm the story, but the goat is in our custody. We cannot base our information on something mystical. It is something that has to be proved scientifically, that a human being turned into a goat," he said.

Belief in witchcraft is widespread in parts of Nigeria, Africa's most populous nation. Residents came to the police station to see the goat, photographed in one national newspaper on its knees next to a pile of straw.

Four Reasons Why Your Tuition is Increasing

1. Your State has decided to cut the amount of money that is usually allocated for students each year. For example, Your state may have allocated $5,500 per student and now they have cut that amount to $4900.

2. Some of universities have been reigning in spending but other 'flagship' universities have increased spending per student. Some of this spending could be due to increased services such as student security due to the unfortunate occurrence of student shootings.

3. Schools have increased spending on administrative, maintenance, and student services. They are paying professors more, adding more student centers, etc.

4. If you go to a big private university, they have increased prices because they have increased their spending habits. They have been spending more because of the increased tuition and money pouring in from endowments.

Maybe prices will start to go down as the economic status quo will cause all universities to cut back on spending?

This is based on this article.

Student Businesses Honorable Mentions!!!

We felt bad for leaving out other student businesses that we thought were worthy of being covered on the blog. Now, we wanted to cover good student businesses especially those with a professional website and those who had an interesting idea. Also, we wanted to cover a business in a different industry each day. For example, Monday(Life Sciences), Tuesday(Food/Confection), Wednesday(Education), Thursday(Entertainment), and Friday(Ecommerce). Some of the businesses that were not mentioned overlapped with another business from the same industry.

Here is the List of Businesses that were Left Out:

1. Easybib.com- Really cool website if you are looking for a quick way to get a MLA citation and other citations for books, websites, magazines, you name it. Everyone hates writing works cited after spending hours writing a paper.

2. Syllabuscentral.com- Have you Ever Missed the 1st day of class? Of Course, nobody is perfect. In that case, this website provides syllabuses for classes all over the country enter your university, search for the professor, and print out the syllabus.

3. University Tees- This website is great if you run a club or just need some custom made t-shirts. They do silk screening for shirts, stitching for hats, etc.

4. YoDcards.com- If you love playing poker and would love to personalize your own deck of cards, this site is great for doing that. Just submit a .jpg file and you are ready to go. The prices are really cheap and you get a minimum of four decks.

5. The-writing-center.com- This website is great,BUT they charge a ridiculous amount of money for their services. They must be the BEST editors in the world, who knows? If you are down to the wire, bitting off finger nails and you need that A and have the cash, why not?

Yes We Can!

In just a few days, President-Elect Obama will become President Barack Obama and we will hopefully usher in a new administration that brings about smart policies and great changes to this country. President-Elect Obama hopes that we all can come together to help support his policies and we at sKoolBoY will do whatever is necessary to spread his message of unity. We hope that he is successful at initiating all his policies and hope this country can again be respected as a great power. We would like to remind everyone that HBO will be broadcasting a free concert on Sunday, so check that out and ask your local service provider. If you are going to the inauguration on Tuesday, feel free to comment about your feelings about seeing the first African-American President be inaugurated. This is a special time in our history. Hopefully, other minorities see this as an opportunity to make great strides and break down more barriers in years to come.

Shop and Save the Environment- Go Captain Planet!

We are sad that this is the last business we have to highlight but life goes on. We will put out a list of honorable mentions tomorrow because there are just so many student businesses to talk about.

sKoolBoY presents the environmental oriented business named CarbonCart. This website allows you to buy items on their site through Amazon and buy carbon credits that can be used for some environmental purpose. Let's elaborate...

Founders: (The Team)

The students came up with the CarbonCart concept last year. The for-profit CarbonCart LLC business was created and is owned by Probus, 19, a business administration student from Sammamish; and Ryan Tilton, 19, a computer science student from Duvall. Joining them on the project are Laura Hanes, 19, a marketing student from Bonney Lake; and Kevin McFarland, 18, a student from Bellevue who is studying economics and classics.
They're drawing in part on Tilton's experience as an entrepreneur, which is already extensive despite his age. By his count, CarbonCart is his fifth venture. He started as a teenager selling audio subwoofers, and later tried portable hard drives. In addition, he ran an e-commerce site called stockthat.com, which provided some insights and lessons the students are now applying to CarbonCart"
Description: (How it Works)

CarbonCart.com is an eco-conscious e-commerce site carrying online retail giant Amazon.com's entire product inventory that allows consumers to carbon neutralize their internet shopping. By placing their orders for Amazon products through CarbonCart.com, consumers can purchase carbon credits to pay for renewable energy initiatives, reforestation or energy efficiency projects that offset the carbon dioxide generated in the shipping of their purchases. CarbonCart.com is an environmentally friendly way to shop online. Offering millions of products through Amazon.com, CarbonCart.com offsets 100% of the CO2 produced by each package it ships. At checkout, customers choose which type of carbon offset project they wish to support.

What we Think: This is a really cool website. We usually do not like to give our competitors a boost but since this site is so environmentally conscious and doing a great service to the earth, we will put aside our differences. The site uses Amazon so they have an extensive selection with customer reviews and detailed product information. It is really clean looking and great.

Go Green!

Funny Video of the Week- How not to Play Dead?!

The internet is full of great stuff and so if we find something worth posting we will make that picture, article, video, etc of the week. This video is hilarious, we had to post this. Check it out.

No more Remakes, Time to Get Scripped!

So far we have covered a student business involved with life sciences, food industry (candy), and education. Today, sKoolBoY Presents Scripped, a website that provides a free script writing software and a venue for writers to sell their scripts to producers all over the country and the world to possibly be used in a feature length or short film.

Scripped is also advised by a strong team of industry and legal professionals.

Site Description:
Scripped offers videos written and produced by the Internet audience. They are a community of over 9,000 writers that have posted nearly 12,000 scripts for both features and web shorts.

sKoolBoY Assessment:
We think this site is interesting and really useful for anybody who is looking to make a video for a class project, a video for their website, and more. The amount of people on this site is impressive. They offer script editing services but they are sort of pricey. Otherwise, this site encourages creativity and is full of creative writing professionals and should be a great website to pool writing talent from in years to come.
